Since a long time We’ve seen a lot of Egyptian ministers and government officials traveling here and there in order to meet with tour operators, hold press conferences in major trade shows around the word, participate in mega marketing campaign promoting tourism to Egypt from key European markets -
Yet none of these have made any success in putting some pressure on other ministries like Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transport, etc… in order to develop the country’s infrastructure! For instance, in Paris there are 14 underground lines other than fast trains – Cairo, to the contrary, there are I think only 2 underground lines! A nice fun fact is that Cairo’s total number of inhabitants is +/- 18 million which happens to be by mere coincidence the same number of inhabitants of the Australian continent…
In all major European cities, there is a train station inside the airports that will take you then to different destinations. In Cairo there isn’t… In the matter of fact, if you ever thought of going from Cairo to Hurgahda over the weekend, you’ll have to be a victim of the monopoly prices of Egypt Air that will charge you mostly USD 200 per round trip ticket. While if you live in London and decide to go to Paris over the weekend, you’d pay for the air ticket a price as low as USD 100 round trip!
As if Egyptians income is far much better than the Londoners’?
It’s actually about corruption and protecting that corruption! A national company like Egypt Air that imposes exclusivity for Cairo skies does’t share with Egyptians, the stakeholders of the company – its financial statements according to the MB Minister of Civil Aviation statement before the ouster of the former President Morsi. Implying a huge loss certainly…
So Egypt Air loses money although there is no competition in Cairo, the country’s major airport! What about if there is some competition? Definitely Egypt Air will be bankrupted within a month or so… What kind of an infrastructure is this for developing tourism to a country with such beautiful long coasts on both the Red and Mediterranean Seas, not to mention the store of more than 1/3 of the world’s monuments!
In the matter of fact, officials of Egypt Air are not only able to compete but they are also spending money on satellite worldwide offices that are said to be a massive cut of the company’s expense!
The Egyptian revolution called for freedom among other things and one of the aspects of freedom is that people get to choose a government that they believe is honest, straight-forward and able to resolve Egyptians’ problems. Consecutive Egyptian governments never looked at new ways to tackle in order to make things better! It’s always the same old way… As if no one of them knew about Einstein’s famous saying: “madness is to do the same thing over and over again expecting different results” – As if no one of them travelled and saw other more civilized countries and the capabilities of other nations. As if no one of them had the slightest hope that if he/ she starts something today perhaps somebody will come later on to build on it and the country develops and moves forward…
If there is an open skies policy in Cairo, Egypt Air will definitely suffer big time. And this is a golden opportunity I believe to restructure the company and put it on track to be able to compete with major regional and international airlines. Competition also is always in the interest of the potential buyers who will then find a number of options for flying within the country from its capital major airport. Hence will be able to pick up the price? The quality? Or perhaps both if an airline provides so…
However – continuing like this will benefit only those people with fat monthly paychecks and make them even richer! In the interim, businesses in remote locations will continue to suffer and be dependent to charter flights from European countries – So eventually when these stop like right now… Their businesses also stops! And their employees are sent home for a chill…
My late grandfather has once told me when we were traveling by train from Cairo is that the Egyptian railways have been constructed by the British during the time of occupation! I didn’t pay a lot of attention to this piece of information at the time. But now, I think of this and say – Why the heck did we not supplement this network with new lines to other different cities across the country? Why did we wait and wait until the population is now 90 millions and all of us live on less than 10% of the land? But most importantly why don’t we even start now so that in 10/ 20 years time, our children will not have to ask the same questions?
Developing the Egyptian infrastructure is actually is not only in the benefit of hotels, travel agencies and those who make a living from tourism… It’s a facility that all industries will benefit of like for like! Redistributing the population and making use of the land God blessed us!
Then and only then, tourism could really develop to the better. What it takes is not money/ funds for the construction of said infrastructure. What it takes is actually the will of the people to change the facts on the ground and to pave the road for future generations to build on it… What it takes is some good honest competent government officials who make their own decisions rather than always trying to please the boss!  What it takes is the true values of the Egyptian revolution, nothing more…
